Baldwin Lawn Playground, City Botanic Gardens
Baldwin Lawn Playground, City Botanic Gardens
Located within the City Botanic Gardens, Baldwin Lawn Playground offers recreational opportunities for children of all ages and abilities.
The most striking feature of this playground is a green coloured fort with a series of cubbies, observation decks, climbing nets and slides (including one made from rolling steel tubes). Interactive sensory play equipment is positioned at both ground level and along the wheelchair-accessible playground ramp. These play elements allow children to manipulate different pieces of equipment and/or experiment with sound by tapping, banging and scraping. Shading is provided by the surrounding gardens and material sails.
Sensory play is continued in a sheltered sandpit area. Younger children will delight in using diggers, sand activity table and of course, general free play.
Towards the rear of the playground is a selection of rockers, a freestanding nest swing a multiple bay swingset (includes a toddler seat, a parent-child facing seat and a large harnessed seat). There is also a carousel that can accommodate two wheelchair users. This entire area is covered with soft rubber flooring for additional safety. There are no material sails, however adequate sun protection is afforded by the magnificent tall trees nearby.
Several picnic tables and chairs overlook the Baldwin Lawn Playground, allowing supervising adults to rest, enjoy a coffee or tend to babies in prams.
Of course, a trip to the City Botanic Gardens isn't complete without a river walk and admiring the historic buildings nearby.
Unfortunately, the only parking available is along Alice Street (paid parking). Visitors are encouraged to access the gardens by walking, cycling or catching a bus from other areas in the city.
